MURRELET, a member of the auk family, is a small, chubby seabird. It flies low over the water with rapid wing beats; like other alcids it can also "fly" underwater in pursuit of fish, crustaceans and other food. Two species are present on the outer coast. The marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) is usually found close to shore or, very rarely, on coastal lakes.
