NAUKANA, William, fur trader, settler (b 1813, Hawaiian Islands; d Dec 1909, Saltspring Island). One of the HAWAIIANS recruited by the HBC to work in the FUR TRADE in BC, he arrived from the Hawaiian Islands in the 1840s and worked at various trading posts around the province, including FORT LANGLEY and FORT VICTORIA. He was living in the San Juan Islands during the 1860s but decided to move back to British territory in 1872, when the islands were given to the US following the infamous PIG WAR....
