Nelsen, Nels Johan

NELSEN, Nels Johan, ski jumper (b 3 June 1894, Salengen, Norway; d 1943). In 1912 he immigrated to REVELSTOKE, the base from which he became the world's top SKI jumper. Not long after he arrived in Canada he began winning national championships and setting world records. His best jump, 240 ft (73.15 m) in 1924, stood as the international benchmark for 7 years. After losing his hand in a hunting accident in 1932 he focussed on coaching; among his pupils was Bob Lymburne, a world record holder...
