NEW DENVER, village, pop 487 (2021), overlooks the east side of SLOCAN LK in the W KOOTENAY. Originally called Eldorado, it was established during 1891–92 as a service centre for the surrounding MINING area, though the Slocan mining boom collapsed after WWI. The present name refers to Denver, CO. During WWII JAPANESE Canadians from the coast were interned here (see JAPANESE, RELOCATION OF), and many remained. The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre opened in 1994 and recalls this period....
