NEW GOLD HARBOUR is a village site at the eastern end of Maude Island in Skidegate Inlet, between the largest of the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS, Moresby and Graham. The HAIDA name for the village, Haina (or Xa'ina), means "sunshine town." It was occupied prehistorically, then reoccupied about 1860 by families from villages on the outer coast, one of which was called Gold Harbour (Chaatl) because it was near where GOLD was discovered in 1850, prompting a rush of outsiders to the islands.
