NORTH PACIFIC CANNERY VILLAGE is a restored SALMON CANNERY in PORT EDWARD south of PRINCE RUPERT. In operation from 1889 to 1972, it is located on Inverness Passage, the northern arm of the SKEENA R. At its peak it employed up to 700 FIRST NATIONS, CHINESE and JAPANESE workers during the summer season. Declared a National Historic Site in 1985, it re-creates a working cannery and the hierarchy of living arrangements for its employees.
