ODJIG, Daphne, artist (b 11 Sept 1919, Manitoulin Island, ON). As a result of the prejudice she experienced as a young woman, she denied her FIRST NATIONS heritage for many years, claiming to be French, Italian, Spanish—anything but aboriginal. At age 23 she found work in a Toronto factory, but it was the world of museums and art galleries that enthralled her.
