OLIVER, John, farmer, politician, premier 6 Mar 1918–17 Aug 1927 (b 31 July 1856, Hartington, England; d 17 Aug 1927, Victoria). The son of a farm labourer, he immigrated to Ontario with his family in 1870 and arrived in BC 7 years later. He worked at labouring jobs before settling on a farm in DELTA. He was drawn into local politics and in 1900 won election as a LIBERAL to the provincial legislature, where he became leader of the opposition. Defeated in 1909, he remained out of politics...
