ORPHEUM THEATRE opened in downtown VANCOUVER in 1927 as a venue for vaudeville and live THEATRE. At the time it was the largest theatre in Canada. Later it was converted to a movie theatre, the most palatial along Granville St's theatre row. It was managed by Ivan ACKERY from 1935 to 1969. By the 1970s the building was owned by Famous Players, who planned to convert it to a multiscreen cinema, but the city purchased it in 1974 and restored it as a live-performance venue with a seating capacity...
