OSPREY (Pandion haliaetus) is a large white, black and grey bird of prey widely present throughout the southern half of the province, with a particularly significant breeding area around CRESTON and NELSON. Ospreys feed exclusively on FISH diving from great heights to pluck them from water; they are also known as fish hawks. Normally they build their large stick nests in the open atop high trees or pilings close to water. They are summer visitors, migrating south in the fall.
