OTTER, SS, the first propeller-driven steamship in the N Pacific, was built in 1852 for the HBC in England by Green, Wigrams and Green. The vessel was 37.2 m long, 6 m wide and 220 tons burden. Superior to the SS BEAVER in size, speed and efficiency, the Otter was sent to the coast to assist its famous predecessor but soon developed a reputation of its own.
