Oystercatcher


OYSTERCATCHER, black (Haematopus bachmani), is a CROW-sized coastal bird with black plumage set off by pink legs and a long orange-red bill. It is seen in all seasons on islets and rocky shorelines along the coast from Alaska to Baja California. It eats exclusively shellfish, but despite its name principally MUSSELS and LIMPETS, which it opens by inserting its bill between the shells of a bivalve and slicing the hinge muscles.
