PACOFI, on Moresby Island, 47 km south of SKIDEGATE in the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS, was the site of a fish plant that opened in 1909 and soon went out of business. The name is an abbreviation for Pacific Coast Fisheries, headed by Alvo von ALVENSLEBEN. Rumour circulated that he was a German spy and that Pacofi was a submarine base in disguise. A SALMON saltery and cannery (see SALMON CANNING) operated here from 1927 to 1949.
