Peace River Block

PEACE RIVER BLOCK was a 14,170 sq km block of land straddling the PEACE R in the northeast corner of BC. The province gave it to the federal government in 1883 as part of the land transfers that made possible the construction of the CPR. Ottawa did not select the exact location of the Block until 1907, and it was opened for homesteading in 1912. In 1930 the federal government returned to BC the parts of the Block that it still owned.
