PEDEN, William "Torchy," cyclist (b 16 Apr 1906, Victoria; d 25 Jan 1980, Chicago, IL). An all-around athlete, he starred in BASEBALL, HOCKEY, FOOTBALL and SWIMMING before concentrating on bicycle road racing. He represented Canada at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and turned professional 2 years later, competing in the gruelling 6-day CYCLING races that were a fad during the 1930s and 1940s.
