PITKA, John, Estonian pioneer (b 19 Feb 1872, Jalgsemaa, Estonia; d 1944). A hero in the Estonian War of Independence in 1918–19, he was appointed rear admiral of the Estonian navy and knighted by the British for services as an ally against the Russian Bolshevik regime.
