Priest Camp


PRIEST CAMP, at Garnett Lk in SUMMERLAND, is the probable site of St Joseph's Station, a Jesuit mission founded by Father Giovanni Nobili between 1845 and 1848. St Joseph's was the first non-aboriginal settlement in the OKANAGAN VALLEY. The camp was also used by FUR TRADERS travelling the Okanagan FUR BRIGADE trail, by miners heading for the Cariboo goldfields (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO) and by ranchers driving cattle north to the rail construction camps.
