Prisons


PRISONS are administered by both the federal Department of the Solicitor General and the provincial Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Federal institutions receive prisoners who are serving sentences of 2 years or more, while provincial institutions are for inmates serving less than 2 years. Jails, also called remand or detention centres and administered by the province, accommodate persons who are awaiting trial or who have received short sentences.
