Prohibition


PROHIBITION took effect in BC on 1 Oct 1917. A bill banning the sale of liquor except for medicinal, sacramental and industrial purposes had passed the legislature the previous year and was approved by referendum during the 1916 provincial election. The new law met with only qualified success. Enforcement was difficult and expensive.
