Prophet River


PROPHET RIVER, pop 100 (2001), on the ALASKA HWY 90 km south of FORT NELSON, is a FIRST NATIONS community, home to DUNNE-ZA (Beaver), SEKANI and DENE-THAH (Slavey) people. The name refers to the Sekani prophet Zacharie Dakodoa, who encouraged resistance to white encroachment. In 1911 the local band adhered to TREATY NO 8.
