PROVINCIAL POLICE were established in 1858 to maintain order in the goldfields of the new colony of mainland BC. Known until 1895 as the BC Constabulary, the small force patrolled a vast frontier territory by canoe, horse and wagon, enforcing liquor and games laws, maintaining peace between aboriginals and the first settlers, policing strikes, controlling smuggling and generally enforcing provincial statutes.
