QLT INC, one of BC's leading BIOTECHNOLOGY companies, was a pioneer in photodynamic therapy (PDT), a field of medicine utilizing light-activated drugs in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. The company was founded as Quadra Logic Technologies in 1981 by a group of medical scientists based at UBC, including Dr Julia Levy, who became president of the company in 1995. Its lead product is Visudyne, a treatment for macular degeneration.
