RAIL is a small marsh bird, usually tawny or grey-brown in colour, inhabiting freshwater and brackish WETLANDS where it nests just above water level and feeds on SNAILS, INSECTS, FROGS and plants. The rail has bare, stalky legs and long toes, which enables it to manoeuvre through its weedy habitat.
