REFUGE COVE nestles in a quiet harbour at the south end of W REDONDA ISLAND near the entrance to DESOLATION SOUND. HANDLOGGERS were active on the island from about 1900 and the large lagoon behind the cove attracted settlers prior to WWI. In 1914 a school opened to serve the children of these pioneer families, and a store made the cove a provisioning centre for the area.
