REMO, a riverboat stop on the north side of the SKEENA R just west of TERRACE, was originally known as Bateman's Landing after a pioneer family. In the early 1900s, before the arrival of the GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC RWY, it was the main settlement in the area and boasted a hotel and store. By 1912 a ferry ran to Breckenridge Landing, also named after an early settler, on the opposite shore. Kitsumgallum Timber Co operated a mill at Remo in the late 1910s (see SAWMILLING).
