Russ, Amos

RUSS, Amos, Haida leader (b circa 1850, Queen Charlotte Islands; d 1934, Queen Charlotte Islands). He was the first HAIDA on the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS to convert to Christianity. Born to high status, he was given the name Gedanst and marked as successor to the tribal head, Chief Skidegate. Instead he came under the influence of METHODIST CHURCH missionaries. When the chief ordered him to choose between white and Haida ways he responded by sawing down his family TOTEM POLES and chopping them...
