RUTLAND, an AGRICULTURAL settlement on the CNR, 8 km east of KELOWNA in the OKANAGAN VALLEY, was named after John Rutland, an Australian settler who grew wheat here in the 1890s. Irrigation helped the community, formerly known as Ellison Flats, become a rich orchard and fruit-packing centre (see TREE FRUITS).
