RYGA, George, writer (b 27 July 1932, Deep Creek, AB; d 18 Nov 1987, Summerland). His parents were immigrants from the Ukraine and he grew up on a rough homestead in northern Alberta. He began writing as a teenager and won a scholarship to study at the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1949. During the 1950s he lived in Edmonton, working at different jobs and struggling to be a writer.
