SAILING has a long history in BC, one of the most beautiful cruising and racing areas in the world. However, the first recorded sailing competition, held at ESQUIMALT by the Royal Navy in 1859, failed due to lack of wind. NEW WESTMINSTER's first sailing race was staged at the Queen's Birthday celebrations in 1861. Steamboat racing was also popular around this time.
