SHINER (Cymatogaster aggregata), the silvery saltwater fish caught by children from docks along the coast, is a species of sea perch. Its flat sides are striped with black, except for the breeding male, which becomes black all over. Young are born alive and fully formed. The fish congregate in bays around pilings and beneath wharves. They grow to about 20 cm, just long enough to give young anglers their first thrill of the catch.
