SIMPSON, George, HBC governor 1821–60 (b circa 1787, Lochbroom, Scotland; d 7 Sept 1860, Lachine, QC). From the time the HBC absorbed the NORTH WEST CO in 1821, he was the most powerful person in the Canadian FUR TRADE, serving as governor of the Northern and Columbia departments from 1821 to 1826, then overseas governor of the entire HBC domain to his death.
