Skookumchuck

SKOOKUMCHUCK, 45 km north of CRANBROOK on the KOOTENAY R, is a LOGGING community and site of a pulp mill, built in 1969 and purchased by Ontario-based Tembec Inc in 1999 (see also PULP AND PAPER). The Crows Nest Pass Lumber Co had a RWY LOGGING show here in the 1920s. The name is a CHINOOK JARGON word meaning "strong water."
