SMELT, surf (Hypomesus pretiosus), is a small silvery fish. During the summer smelts swarm in large numbers along shallow beaches and ESTUARIES, where amateur smelters catch them in nets or buckets for eating. An important food source for various commercial fishes, the species is common on the Pacific coast from southern California to Alaska and seldom exceeds 30 cm.
