SMITH, Ralph, miner, politician (b 8 Aug 1858, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Eng; d 12 Feb 1917, Victoria). A COAL miner from the age of 11, he immigrated to Canada in 1891 and settled in NANAIMO, where he soon became an official of the Miners & Mine Labourers Protective Assoc. Selected by the local Reform Club to run as a candidate, he failed to get elected in the 1894 provincial election but won a seat in the legislature in 1898.
