SMITHE, William, farmer, premier 29 Jan 1883–29 Mar 1887 (b 30 June 1842, Matfen, England; d 28 Mar 1887, Victoria). He came to BC in 1862 and settled on a farm near COWICHAN LK. Establishing himself as a community leader, he was named road commissioner for Cowichan in 1865, then ran successfully for the first legislative assembly following CONFEDERATION in 1871.
