SMITHERAM, Henry Arthur "Butch," aboriginal activist (b 8 Jan 1918, Penticton; d 14 Mar 1982, Keremeos). He was deprived of official Indian status when his mother, a member of the OKANAGAN First Nation, married an Englishman. After dropping out of high school he worked at a variety of jobs until he joined the federal Department of Indian Affairs.
