Soopolallie

SOOPOLALLIE (Shepherdia canadensis), also called soapberry, is an erect shrub with oval leaves and red, translucent BERRIES that are bitter-tasting and somewhat soapy to the touch. FIRST NATIONS people harvest the berries midsummer and make "Indian ice cream" by whipping them into a foam with water and a sweetener. See also PLANTS, NATIVE.
