SOUTHBANK, pop 122, 24 km south of BURNS LAKE, is a small LOGGING and AGRICULTURAL settlement on the south shore of FRANÇOIS LK. It has been a ferry terminus since 1916, and a hotel and outpost hospital operated here in the 1920s. The ferry Omineca Princess was still running in 2000; its predecessor, the Jacob Henkel, honoured a pioneer who came to the area in 1904. Many MENNONITES settled here.
