SPALLUMCHEEN, the largest district municipality in BC by area, pop 5,134 (2001), lies north of OKANAGAN LK in the Spallumcheen Valley. The name comes from a SALISH word said to mean "beautiful place," or "beautiful valley." The earliest settlers arrived in the 1860s. The first community was called Lansdowne, after the gov gen, but it was abandoned when construction of the SHUSWAP & OKANAGAN RWY passed it by and a new settlement sprang up at ARMSTRONG in 1892.
