SPRINGHOUSE, a ranching settlement 24 km south of WILLIAMS LAKE in the CARIBOO, was originally an inn on the earliest trail leading to the goldfields (see GOLD RUSHES). It dates from 1862. Augustine Boitano bought the property in 1886 and developed the ranch with his sons Antoine and Clifford. The name acknowledges nearby St Peter's Spring. See also CATTLE INDUSTRY.
