STANLEY is an abandoned MINING townsite 65 km east of QUESNEL on the road to BARKERVILLE. It sprang to life when GOLD was discovered at Lightning Crk in 1861. Named for Edward Stanley, former British colonial secretary and Secretary of State for India, it remained a productive mining site for 4 decades, then petered out; by the 1950s it was virtually deserted.
