Stawamus Chief


STAWAMUS CHIEF is a granite dome towering above SQUAMISH, 65 km north of VANCOUVER. It rises abruptly from the edge of Hwy 99 (see SEA TO SKY HWY) for 600 m and its smooth walls have made it one of the foremost sites in the world for granite ROCK CLIMBING. The Chief, as it is commonly called, is also the most-used hiking summit in BC via the steep Backside Trail, and was designated a provincial PARK in 1995. The first recorded climb, Peasant's Route, was in 1958 by Les McDonald and Jim Baldwin....
