STEELE, Samuel Benfield, mounted police officer (b 5 Jan 1849, Purbrook, ON; d 30 Jan 1919, London, England). As a teenager in Ontario he joined the militia to repulse the Fenian incursions from the US; in 1870 he went west to Manitoba with the militia to quell the first Red River Rebellion.
