STEPHEN, Alexander Maitland, writer, social activist (b 1882, Hanover, ON; d 1 July 1942, Vancouver). He moved to VICTORIA with his family in 1898 and articled in his uncle's law firm, but he abandoned law in favour of a series of labouring jobs around BC. He then returned to school and studied ARCHITECTURE at the Univ of Chicago, then went to England where he enlisted for military service when WWI began.
