STOLTMANN, Randy, environmental activist (b 28 Sept 1962; d 22 May 1994). On a hike into the CARMANAH VALLEY in 1988 he first came across the huge Sitka SPRUCE forest there and began to campaign for its preservation from LOGGING. In 1990 part of the area was protected as a provincial PARK, and has since been expanded to include the neighbouring WALBRAN VALLEY watershed. A grove of Sitka spruce in the park has been named after him, as well as a 2,600 sq km wilderness area in the Elaho Valley...
