STUMP LAKE is a ranching district (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) 32 km south of KAMLOOPS on Hwy 5. In 1873 Peter Fraser had a sheep farm at the north end while William Palmer had a ranch at the south. The lake is a recent formation; early settlers recalled seeing dead stumps there, hence the name. It is a popular windsurfing, sailing and sport FISHING site and it lies along the migration path of 20 species of waterfowl.
