SWEENEY COOPERAGE LTD, at one time the largest barrel maker in the British Empire, was established in VICTORIA in 1889 by Michael Sweeney, a cooper from Newfoundland. The elder Sweeney ran the company until 1920; that year his son Leo (1886–1977) took over and expanded the business, then called Canadian Western Cooperage, to VANCOUVER.
