Tasu

TASU, on the west coast of Moresby Island 55 km south of SKIDEGATE in the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS, was the site of several small COPPER mines from 1914 to 1917. Westfrob Mines, a subsidiary of Falconbridge Nickel, had a large open-pit iron ore operation here (1962–83). The modern townsite had an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium and was home to 400 people. The name is a HAIDA word meaning "lake of plenty," and refers to Tasu Sound.
