THORNTON, Mildred Valley, artist (b 7 May 1890, Dresden, ON; d 27 July 1967, Vancouver). She studied at the Ontario College of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago and began to paint professionally in the 1910s. Like her better-known contemporary, Emily CARR, she became known for her interest in FIRST NATIONS culture; she completed more than 300 portraits of aboriginal people during her career.
