Thurston Harbour

THURSTON HARBOUR, on the north shore of Talunkwan Island 50 km southeast of SKIDEGATE in the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS, was a WWI LOGGING depot run by the Imperial Munitions Board to mill Sitka SPRUCE for airplane construction. The remote landing was equipped with a hospital, offices, YMCA building and store. The end of the war interrupted the construction of 3 large SAWMILLS and everything was abandoned or sold. The harbour, named after a HALIBUT boat, remained a logging base until the 1970s.
